Nothing in the Creed about our responsibilities to each other: to the poor, to strangers, to foreigners. Not explicitly, perhaps. But I would argue it is very much there. The key word is vivificantem - that is, "the giver of life." And this points to John 10:10, "I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly." Also note that the Holy Spirit, the giver of life, has "spoken through the prophets," who are the most uncompromising voices of justice in the Hebrew Bible. And this is wrapped up in the eschatological expectation of the final words, vitam venturi saeculi - "the life of the world to come." All of this is very much connected with the things you mention, though of course it is not 'just' a political agenda. Which is to say, without justice and charity you don't even have the Creed. |
