Yes, that's certainly true and it is depressing. There is much to be said about the hijacking of religious rhetoric by hollow men and by malignant actors. This is not a particularly new phenomenon, however, and I do think discerning observers can usually tell where a professed position comes from a deep experience and identity in faith (e.g., Pope Leo) and where it is a mere ornament on something completely different (e.g., Mr Yaxley-Lennon). The house built on sand, as the parable has it. I would say that things are a bit different on BoyChat, where we are all, in some sense, fictional personae. As they say, on the internet nobody can tell you're four babies in a trenchcoat, and we perverts have an incentive to be a wee bit misleading in how we present ourselves. However serious and heartfelt our discussions may sometiems be, this is all ultimately a bit of a carnival. If someone wants to claim that they're an evangelical-Protestant-turned-Muslim-turned-gay-Catholic-district attorney-with-a-chef-tradwife, I'm not inclined to get too outraged about whatever spurious theological nonsense they might spout. A pantomime is not exactly a tragedy. So the proper answer to Django's question - "seriously?" - is, "yeah, you first babe." |
