The point is that no American administration would allow Canada and Mexico to get to a position whereby they could threaten the US. It has nothing whatever to do with Trump. It is important that we grasp things realistically, as Mearsheimer rightly insists, because otherwise we will be led by moral spasms into flinging ourselves into hideous conflicts, like that of Ukraine, when Russia is doing no more than pursuing the same ends of security as America pursues in its own hemisphere.
