In what way is the Ukraine a threat to Russia?

I have never once heard anyone from the U.S. say,"gee, let's invade Russia. Up until Putin, most people in the U.S. did not have any bad feeling about Russia and at least a 1/3 wouldn't have been able to find the Ukraine on the map :P And again, Gaza is a different story and I have already said what I think about that. It's not about reason, it's about religious mythology and none of them care how many kids have to die to satisfy their god's commandments. Everything else is just rhetoric.
