I agree that as a strategy this wouldn't work. We should support youth agency because it's the right thing to do, not because it will help us get into boys' pants. It's very likely that most young people, if they had a political voice, would support protectionist laws and safetyism, at least at first, just the way first wave feminism largely did when women got the vote, resulting in prohibition. Prohibition was misguided, but it was aimed at a genuine social evil. Stranger danger is largely a myth, but that isn't the same as saying young people are not subjected to unwanted sexual attention from adults. (Adults, as boylovers well understand, are gross.) Enhancing the agency of young people will, at least in the short run, benefit young people, not MAPs. It's not a strategy. It's just what those who care about young people should demand. hugzu ;-p |
