It's not puritanism at all. Alcohol doesn't bring pleasure. Is liver disease pleasurable? A hangover? Vomiting? Being run over by a drunk driver? Annoying people at concerts? Domestic abuse and neglect? There's nothing good that comes out of it. And what would France be without wine? A whole lot better.
