"four centuries ago, the European musical establishment was so (rightfully) smitten by the sound of boys' voices that a whole industry was established to "queer" puberty (am I using the term correctly?) musical factories in Naples where first boys had their balls cut off and were then trained to feed Europe's opera houses and cathedrals. Many boys asked for it, or at least agreed to go along with it." I think this gets to the root of the problem. The question is: do we wish to critique the social and cultural environment in which we make decisions? Or do we give up on social change, and just seek ways of mitigating the negative outcomes, even if the mitigations serve to further entrench the power of the very factors that are causing these outcomes? America is a puritanical society. Funnily enough, this causes kids to grow up with poor mental health. Social media exacerbates these problems. But never mind - for America also has the least regulation of medicine, of the food industry, of the drugs industry, of any capitalist country. So we have the drugs to take care of mental illness, to remove stress and anxiety and unhappiness. So everything's fine, right? Everyone wins. History has ended. Society as an endless shopping mall full of pill-popping 'consumers', forever and ever. The apotheosis of capitalism. How wonderful! |
