I said "making common cause with." European socialized medicine does not place doctors in a "non-capitalist context." Doctors became the new sex police when the authority of the priests deteriorated to the point they became ineffective in that role. European socialized medicine is a good thing, and the US should have it. But Europe is capitalist, not socialist. The problem is not that you are imagining a different society. Of course we should do that. But you are counterposing it to providing treatment for trans kids that they have spent most of the last century fighting for. They are not irrational to demand it. It has a proven record of helping them survive and thrive in a hostile social environment. The NHS was providing this treatment, as were other European nations. Now there is a politically motivated movement aimed at a total and permanent ban. This is exactly what took place in the US. The only difference is that the political interference with this treatment in Europe takes place on a national scale, while in the US it is (so far) regionalized. This reflects the difference in the type of health care systems, but neither system prevents sex panics from influencing medical policy. (If European socialized medicine effectively insulated the medical establishment from sex panics, MAPs would not be pathologized in Europe.) I want blockers on demand, because I don't trust doctors or parents. But if you are now saying you support blockers for kids if their doctors and parents agree it is the right treatment for them, well, that's basically the trans position as I understand it, so welcome aboard. The blocker bans are the complete opposite of that. hugzu ;-p |
