" I'm very suspicious of the "born this way" narrative applied to sexuality. It has its origins as a political strategy in the fight for acceptance against conservatives who wanted sexual minorities to change and conform." That statement is wrong on a number of levels. I have explained and explained and explained how sexuality is both a matter of predisposition and development... if you don't understand that, it is because you are choosing not to. Yes, the statement "Born this way" is an oversimplification of a more complex process that is not fully understood but it is not a choice people actively make. And for the sake of understanding, it is true enough. Just look at the BLs that you have known over the years, how many wish that they could simply be like everyone else? But they can't so they either learn to accept themselves as they are or they self-destruct. Also, just because something has political uses, doesn't mean it isn't mostly true. The same goes for the "trans narrative" that the political opposition likes to awfulize, people are being real about what they are experiencing... could some of their perceptions be faulty? Sure. But that doesn't mean that they are saying is wrong about themselves. The debate should be what is the best way for them to deal with it...they have had their say in what they believe works best for them... but maybe there are other acceptable alternatives. I don't know. If you want to talk about something fucking political, lets talk about the "heterosexual narrative" of heteronormativity. I think that is very debatable.
