Yesterday, the Green Party of England and Wales became the first major UK party to adopt an explicitly anti-Zionist position. One can read about it on Middle East Eye here or here. Conference supported a motion that recognised Zionism as a form of racism, and backed a single democratic Palestinian state with equal rights for all ethnic and religious groups, rather than a two-state solution. In return, the Israeli state denounced Zack Polanski (who wasn't actually present at the vote, since he is currently campaigning in Holborn and St Pancras), and banned him from entering their territory - which is slightly hilarious; I mean, I don't suppose it very likely that Zack was planning on spending his holidays in Israel! Pro-Zionist protestors outside the conference venue denounced Zack as a "self-hating Jew" (Zack, of course, changed his name at 18 to an explicitly Jewish name in order to embrace and advertise his Jewish heritage), chanted slogans such as "There is no Palestine", and waved banners bearing legends such as "More trees less Hamas" - this being a call for the Greens to stop being an insurgent threat to the Establishment and go back to being the nice, middle-class, unthreatening, tree-hugging party of old. Let us hope that Zack makes a good showing for the Greens in Holborn and St Pancras in three days time. ![]() |
