Not least among Israel's many crimes is the destruction of olive groves in the occupied West Bank with the purpose of ruining the livelihoods of its Palestinian inhabitants. Ubi solitudinem faciunt pacem appellant. The destruction of humanity and the despoliation of the natural environment inevitably seem to go together - as illustrated by Israel's shocking diversion and pollution of the holy River Jordan. For this reason, it is appropriate that the Green Party of England and Wales should consistently oppose both the ruin of nature and the colonisation of land and destruction of human beings and cultures. These things are not separable, however much capitalists may love the idea of giving the blessing of liberal environmentalism to the rapacious exploitation of the Earth and its peoples. The Old Testament prophets also associated the destruction of the natural world with sin and violence: The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. |
