| We all have our own pet theories and ideas, but his are so deeply entrenched that even Arthur himself could not pull the sword from the solid rock Edmund has made of them. Like so many others, he draws the line of what is acceptable and "good" just behind his own heels. It is hard to blame him for that; it is human nature to make such a move. Still, he is not truly interested in debate or scholarship, no matter how much he pretends otherwise. All of that is a front to advance a preconceived agenda. The real question is why he clings to that agenda so fiercely, what part of his ego is bound up in it. I can understand how being part of a sexual minority might create the urge to attach oneself to an ideology that casts one as a heroic and necessary figure in history rather than as a footnote or a villain. We all get it. Yet it has become clear to anyone paying attention that his only defense is to resort to ad hominems rather than engage with the actual issue. If his theories were as sound as he claims, there would be no need for the rudeness and attacks. That, more than anything, reveals his true nature. And, worst of all, it's nothing new to those of us familiar with his character. |
