Whether or not sexologists use the term, I think the strongest part of Eric's argument is that "MAP" erases the relationship aspect of BL, though I suppose this does little to make "MAP" less preferable that "pedophile" or "hebephile." The idea of a BL relationship (platonic or otherwise) is perhaps the most scandalous to the public mind because it doesn't just fail to exclude the possibility of consummation (as the virpeds might have it), but also comes across as self-delusionary about the character of such relationships. But I think this myth than any pedo-child relationship is inherently fraught with danger is exactly the thing that cannot be avoided and, in fact, must be confronted somehow. As such, "MAP" perhaps concedes to our detractors almost as much as "virped" does. There may be some use for it in a more clinical context, but I think usage for activist purposes would leave us wanting. It preserves the creep factor of the "what" without none of the "who."![]() |
