They committed the murder – "the crime of the century" – hoping to demonstrate superior intellect, which they believed enabled and entitled them to carry out a "perfect crime" without consequences. But do the media REALLY have the power to strongly affect people's feelings and attitudes? Can the media actually create mass hysteria and panic, even causing millions of people to barricade themselves in their homes in terror? The answer is "Yes". On October 30, 1938, Orson Welles made a career for himself by a single radio broadcast. Others associated with him went on to successful careers, too. The media have done it before, and they're doing it now with even more powerful media tools than they had before: just a box that makes sounds -- a radio. "The Untold Story Behind The War Of The Worlds" (at least watch this if you don't have time for the original broadcast) describes the power and after-effects of this single radio broadcast, which fooled millions of people and created mass panic.
