The media is just the formal manifestation of people's close-mindedness "The media" doesn't exist. There are innumerable media outlets, and in each one there are editors that control ("gatekeep") the content that is permitted to be published. There are exceptions -- for example, Salon magazine, which provide a forum for beliefs (narratives) that often conflict. But, in general all the large media outlets have adopted the popular narratives because enough people in their target audience accept those narratives without question and so the media outlet can remain profitable by continually promoting those narratives. and if the media were reduced to just people shouting at each other on social media, the nature of the problem would not change. There is no "the media". There are innumerable media outlets, each with different editors in charge (usually, just one editor for each outlet -- the "editor-in-chief" who has managing editors answering to him) -- who is in charge of gatekeeping stories to be published. They guess what they think the people want to hear (or would be willing to believe) then instruct the journalists to write appropriate stories. If an editor makes a mistake, then he can backtrack or make an about-face. People choose the stories they want to believe about underage sex People want to be accepted by the "group" they identify with, and will go along with what they think their group believes (sometimes something amazing happens, when in-depth studies are done which discover that everyone thinks the all the others in their group believe one thing, or the same thing, while in fact this may not be true). The problem is capturing hearts and minds. Hearts are affected by the emotional impact that stories have on people, while minds are influenced by facts -- studies, etc. just as much as you choose the stories you want to believe about the media. I am influenced emotionally to "believe" certain things -- you can easily pull on my heartstrings with certain stories! -- then "the facts" I choose to believe will be those that are congruent with those feelings I have. But I also have done careful studies of how the media functions, so I know better than others what "the mediums" may really be up to. They will not abandon their stories unless you give them one that better suits their predispositions There is no "they". There are people reacting emotionally to stories they hear/see/read -- mostly dummies who don't realize how easy it is for "the media" (their media -- outlets they choose to listen to) to sway them to certain beliefs. and they are not predisposed to give pedophiles an inch. "They" have been emotionally swayed, so have closed "their" minds to reason and empirically-supported "facts". We'll only change anything if we get them while they're young Young people almost always just go along with what they think their elders (or the members of their peer group) believe. Sometimes they even get that wrong! But if you're an elder to one of the younger ones among us, yes -- you can influence them. But the young ones will sometimes have problems accepting what we try to teach them, if it is at odds with the messages that they continually receive from others. (The following is not in a apt place, but I don't know where to put it--I've just about run out of energy in this post and the brain fog is settling in...) There is no "we". There are some of us who HAVE been sucked in by the emotional impact of stories -- and have turned off our "rational minds" -- and others of us who have not succumbed to the emotional appeals of those stories (for various reasons) and approach the stories with our minds still engaged. and that means not just interfering in their adoption of the culture's erotophobia, "They" don't exist. There are some of us who are much more erotophobic than others -- we each lie on a scale of "erotophobism". There is no "culture". There are groups, some larger, some smaller, who vary in how "erotophobic" they are. There is no "culture" but a multitude of cultures under the single umbrella that we call "a society". but every adjacent belief system that supports it like narratives about trauma, victimhood and innocence that go beyond the narrower subject of underage sex. Some of those ascribing to certain "belief systems" know (and when I say "know" I mean "in their hearts" -- it's all emotions again) that the tenets of the "trauma," "victimhood," and "innocence" narratives are either correct (supported by their experiences) or wrong (because their experiences have shown those beliefs to be unsupported). There are no "belief systems". There are people who tend to identify with certain groups, and who will then tend to adopt what "their" groups tell them are the "the correct things" to believe. It's not just about reaching new audiences by taking the place of the media, but also about creating new audiences by aiding their development. Everything is a matter of gradients, everything (and everyone's beliefs) falls along a spectrum. It's a marketing problem -- identify the market segments the best you can (groups often overlap) and then target each one with certain messages, both emotional and rational -- to "win their hearts and minds" (and hearts ALWAYS come first, because your heart blinds your mind to "facts"). For each market segment, "K.I.S.S." Keep the message simple, clear, and easy to understand. Hint: See what Reagan and Thatcher did with "focus groups" -- which now are standard operating procedure for politicians, etc. The above is not well organized -- I'm not feeling well (I'm INCREDIBLY sleep-derived, for reasons too complicated to go into) and my nutrition is horrible (protein I get lots of, but many trace minerals I am lacking, as well as certain vitamins) so perhaps I'm not being as persuasive as I'd like to be (or could be, if I were functioning at a higher level). My bad... M. I wish that I had more than around a dollar to my name, so I could buy some good (but actually quite cheap) vitamins to help improve my health... But, no-can-do... I'm too sick for anything other than lying in bed, and typing ineffective messages on a chat board where I am mostly ignored. So please excuse the incoherence within my posts... |
