Let's talk about boys in shorts...

for hours, days, weeks, months, years...

If I had my druthers, all boys would wear shorts all the time.

No exceptions. No excuses.

(okay -- where frostbite is a clear danger, some form of snow pants would be allowed -- but they come off the moment the boy is indoors).

Shorts would be trim and generally like the ones in your siggy (excellent shorts, btw, and beautiful thighs properly displayed).

Younger boys with thin legs could wear longer, to-the-top-of-the-knee shorts, perhaps with knee length socks.

But from the time a boy reaches the ages of 8 or 9 and his thighs begin to fill out, the shorts should be very short -- one to two inch inseam is about right.

No long pants -- ever -- until the boy graduates middle school. (Cold? Wear knee-length socks!)

Many high school boys still look damn good in shorts and like the South African high schools that you approvingly cite, a shorts uniform should be required for high school boys as well although I suppose we could debate exceptions for boys with too much leg hair.

Thailand still requires shorts of all primary and middle schools boys and most high school boys. Many Singapore schools have a standard shorts uniform through middle school. Shorts uniforms are still standard for most New Zealand schools if I'm not mistaken, although in many cases the shorts have become far too long and now -- alas -- long pants are permitted in some schools in the winter. That was not the case in the 80s -- all the boys I saw when I visited back then -- late in the New Zealand autumn; blustery, chilly weather -- were in proper short uniform shorts with sweaters and jackets to keep off the cold.

In an ideal world, there would be no such thing as a long pants uniform for boy scouts or a long pants school uniform for a boy. Uniforms would be ubiquitous. Boys would wear short, casual athletic shorts for sports or lounging about, dressy shorts suits for church and other formal occasion, and of course shorts uniforms for school.

Interesting observation you made about shorts and cold weather. I grew up in the States in a part of the country where shorts were worn only in very hot weather and then generally because mothers insisted on it -- any boy who showed up to school in shorts would be teased. But I spent a year in my early teens in Europe and there the situation was reversed -- most boys wore shorts most of the time; the sissyish ones would don long pants when it got chilly but the toughest, most macho boys would wear the shortest shorts in the coldest weather. Years later, I lived in another country where that also seemed to be the case -- friends told me that when they were boys, only sissys would wear longs in the winter -- it was a mark of how tough you were to pay no seeming attention to the cold.

That attitude now seems to have appeared in the States -- there have been articles about it and it' a very good thing -- one of the few pieces of really good news in recent times The situation had been so bleak for so long but things do seem to be improving in recent years -- I see a lot of bare knees these days and I note that many schools are requiring uniforms and seem to allow either shorts or longs. I made a post about the improving situation a couple of years ago that I titled something like "The Long Shorts Nightmare is Over" but repeated attempts to find it have failed. But I did manage to retrieve a post I made a while back on a related subject, which I link in case you are interested.

Let's discuss this more!
