I was being tongue in cheek. As it happens, I have much experience of East Anglia, including Norfolk, and there is much to like about Norfolk. Great Yarmouth elected Great Yarmouth First councillors in all nine wards in the 2026 County Council elections. As you will know, Great Yarmouth First is a local party set up by Rupert Lowe and operates under the Restore Britain umbrella; and Lowe is Great Yarmouth's MP. Norfolk is a good example of how first past the post cannot be combined with multi-party politics without perverse results. Colin Sutton of Reform UK won the July 2026 Norfolk Police and Crime Commissioner by-election, but with a ridiculously low 26.7 percent of the vote, because the opposition was split between several parties. Turnout was 17.1 percent, which means that his 'mandate' is based on the support of 4.6 percent (fewer than 1 in 20) of the electorate. The only saving grace is that these elected posts will be abolished in May 2028, thank God. These posts came in under the disastrous government of David Cameron, who caused so much damage to the country with his government's policy of austerity, not to mention his referendum on Brexit. ![]() |
