There is a saying that for good people to do bad stuff, one needs religion. I would correct this to change it to fanaticism. It is the blind following of an idea without regard for moral and ethics that causes harm. That is true for "Save the children no matter the price" , or the "open border", or many religious believes.

Some religion(s) demand that one abstains from critical thinking - those with the worst blasphemy laws.
