In fact, I read it when it first came out. Class fascinates me and I'm always intrigued by stories of people who start out in one class and find themselves in another -- how they have to learn almost a whole new language. The latest such book is Rob Henderson's Troubled (also well worth reading). Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickled and Dimed is a classic of the genre, as, of course, is Orwell's The Road to Wigan Pier. Vance's book is a good read and is prima facie evidence he has an incisive and inquiring mind. I worry, as alluded to in my OP, that the compromises he has had to make with his own moral standards will come back to haunt him. We'll see. SR |
