Just watched Stephen Colbert's Late Show Live and I was astounded at what I heard. Probably fairly presumptuous of me ( a left wing Australian) to comment on the intricacies of American politics but I will anyway.... Firstly, the incredibly humorous comments and clips from the Republican Convention made everyone there look so foolish you would wonder if a swinging voter could possibly vote for them. Then followed what in Australia would be considered slanderous and defamatory remarks and jokes about the judge who threw out Trumps documents case. Adam Kinzinger was a guest on the show and the remarks he made about the Don were at least inflammatory and bordering on defamatory too. The same trend continued with the total mockery and rubbishing of the new running mate of Trump. I know that Stephen Colbert is popular but if this thinking is very widespread, the election might be closer than expected. But I am absolutely astonished that in a nation known for its propensity for litigation, insulting, demeaning and in fact defamatory remarks can be aired. Says something for live TV and even more for the flourishing of free speech. |
