Their whole culture was towards empire, just as the u.s.a. (and probably starting up again in europe) today. All the different facets of maintaining that overarching privilege are in play then as today.

But back then they killed up close and personal, not from afar. They used sword and spear. Think of how insane one would have to be to use such implements upon ANYONE YOU'RE ORDERED TO HATE or FEAR. Think of how ALL OF THAT WAS NORMALIZED.

No, I suspect that there was a lot of suffering, given this ugly context. Where people were twisted to the max, given the horrors they faced if noncomnpliant.

With a mindset, to boot, that thinks of humans "beneath" its Social Status as un-human, even beastly. Or, today, where the "Upper Crust" look down their proverbial noses at The Proles and think nothing of OBJECTIFYING THEM for such short-lived 'sex', paid off with $$$.

Or think of the professional killers themselves. Having survived combat. Trusting no one. Except kids. But the kids HAVING NO ONE to 'have their backs'.

With a society, then and now, so bloodthirsty and horrific that few can hardly even watch "The News" anymore. Without getting profoundly depressed.

And you want to say that such a society is benign? That it CAN LISTEN to kids actual humanity?

Well, maybe the kids are a way out for them (i.e. the combat veterans), and in this we/informal society should assist them in returning to their humanity. That i can see.

(admittedly, i did not read the article to which you refer)
