Islam was for centuries more tolerant of the Jews than Christianity. Yes, Zionism was a Jewish movement seeking a homeland in Palestine. But who could blame the Zionists for believing themselves unwelcome in Europe and the US? I already apologized for this rant. I called it Anglophobic. But that Europe, the UK and the US largely rejected Jewish refugees and Holocaust survivors in the wake of WWII is, if not generally accepted historical fact, certainly the contention of many respected historians. Mandate Palestine was under the supervision and control of the UK. I don't claim solving the problems that presented was easy. But if you are contending this was not a tragic historical failure of the responsibilities of British imperialism, I cannot agree. (It isn't clear to me whether you wish also to absolve the empire from responsibility for the tragedy of the ethnic division of the Indian subcontinent.) Am I merely seeking in the same way to absolve the US of its responsibilities? As I acknowledged, slavery (and also the extermination of the Native American population) are among those responsibilities. But the US has some real anti-colonial bona fides -- we were colonies that resisted and overcame British imperialism, setting an example for many others. I am sorry to see you retreating into the same ethnonationalist apologetics I continue to find distasteful coming from Diogenes. hugzu ;-p ![]() |
