The religion I spoke of in this article has little to do with protecting actual children. That's the whole point. For those that do want to protect their children, the question is from what do they need protecting, and how? As you say, there is uncertainty as to why sexuality became the prime target for this. I'm sure there's many other factors at play, but the biggest one has to be belief in childhood innocence and its unrivaled importance. And you are right that I did not mention the other economic factors that allowed this belief to form and persist for so long but eh, I try to keep my writing relatively concise. |
