According to Christian belief, the Incarnation of God in this world took te shape of a baby boy. The Boy was arguing with rabbis and putting them in their place by age 12. (You are correct that the US was quite religious but not religiously unified. As our underestimated president Eisenhower put it, "Our form of government has no sense unless it is founded in a deeply felt religious faith, and I don't care what it is."
