The "worst of evils" is leading little lambs away from their loving supportive flocks. Due to human NATURE children have a NATURAL instinct to conform and follow along with the group, and alongside that villagers have a corresponding NATURAL tendency to shy away from disease, so they don't want their little lambs contaminated by your germs or your atheism.

Deep down inside you know you picked the wrong side in the battle between good and evil. Sad that you would consider ending it all rather than just ending one part. Anything to make that twang of guilt go away. Anything except giving up the fun reward of viewing "content," in a life depressingly devoid of other human contact.
