Viewed episode 1 last night. I agree with all your comments. I too was ready to hate it, but, so far, I think it's rather good, very stylish, love the music, love the cinematography, stays fairly close to the novel, the acting is excellent - particularly Piggy and Jack. The fish eye lens and saturated colours are very effective at giving it a "fever dream" quality. I will watch the remaining episodes on iplayer this week. But so far, so good, and miles better than the 1990 film - on a completely different level. Obviously, we're not going to get the nudity of the Peter Brook film, but never mind. The Peter Brook film is such a masterpiece. This was always going to be quite a challenge. One has to remember that, in Britain, Lord of the Flies has been on GCSE syllabi for more than 30 years, so everyone will at least have read the book in their childhood, and will already be familiar with the story. Reviews are very mixed indeed, but if both the Guardian and the Express hate it then it must have something going for it! Still, better reserve judgement until I've viewed the whole thing. I would be interested in the reactions of other BCers. ![]() |
