I remember reading in the news about how they managed to arrest several people for downloading/uploading cp with the Tor network. Tor only makes it (somewhat) harder for LEA to track down IP addresses, but Tor can definitely get compromised. It might take LEA a week or two to track down the ip address of someone downloading/uploading illegal content with the Tor network, but it can ultimately be tracked down. If someone isn't using Tor, then their IP can be tracked down within 5 to 10 minutes. If someone is using Tor, it might take LEA about a week to track down their IP. This is how LEA can track down the IP address of Tor users. They monitor the users connecting to the Tor network (at the ISP level). And then they monitor sites where CP is being downloaded/uploaded. They monitor how much data is entering the Tor network, and match that to when illegal files are being downloaded/uploaded to figure out who is downloading/uploading such stuff. Using time-stamps. |
