"young people tend to be left-wing." Perhaps, but not by much. And more recently there's been a divergence between boys and girls with boys leaning slightly towards the Right. The countercultural Left were against establishment institutions until they became the establishment. Boys growing up under such a system are going to have some degree of rebelliousness towards it. Nowadays, the counterculture is not so easily defined in terms of Left or Right. The best example I've seen of it has been Thaddeus Russell (a former Marxist) who interviewed Stephen Kershnar and continues to be a critic of American sexual puritanism. Honestly, I think the Left is too wedded to its exploitation narratives to give up on demonizing pedophiles any time soon and the Right is still quite homophobic and erotophobic, at least as far as childhood influences are concerned. But for what it's worth, the working class conservative still has a soft spot for the adage of "boys will be boys." If we want them to become more accepting of boys messing around with each other (if not necessarily with adults), it doesn't help that the gay rights movement is still associated with the Left. ![]() |
