We need VirPed. We also need alternatives to VirPed. One message that I feel VirPed, with its 12 step attitude, drops the ball on is "non-offending does not define your goodness". At b4um, while encouraging people to follow the law (I didn't- bad idea), I also tell them that they can find their own sense of goodness outside of what society says. I don't know if I'm explaining that quite right. Or doing VirPed justice. I guess I just feel like the "no offending" message is so front and center that it feels like a prerequisite to be loved and accepted. I know "ex-offenders" are accepted there- but it feels like they face even more scrutiny and have to constantly repeat the mantra. And Bly had no qualms about calling me a "molester" and rejecting my application to join when I was trying to find common ground between Mu and VirPed. The actions of some of the VirPed staff have actually made me more anti-anti-c than I was a year ago. And I find that sad. |
