Social contagion

Now my gut reaction is to simply dismiss the term "social contagion" as a fancy sounding buzzword with little or no meaning meant to fool people into thinking it is more important/concerning then it is in reality.

However, I do have an open mind. Can you give me several historical examples of a social contagion so I can put it into context.

Or are you simply trying to say that it is a fad? (In which case, refer back to the first paragraph)
