Let's try not be ethnocentric in looking at this. I think in many ways, Sporus was living the "Roman dream" (Dignitas). He had many of the virtues that the Romans of the patrician class admired. He was clever and ambitious (Prudentia). I am sure it didn't hurt that he was pretty to look at. I doubt may Romans would have seen that what Sporus did as particularly negative (though perhaps somewhat scandalous in an amusing sort if way), in many ways he was just being a good Roman and being practical. Even his death wasn't because of any lack of Roman virtue or impropriety, it was mostly bad luck.
