You position is predicated on the assumption that "Sporus was chosen out of nowhere".

But how does one like him even get close enough to the Emperor to catch his eye?

My understanding is that when Sporus killed himself rather than be publicly raped in the Colosseum, that was like 2 or 3 lovers after Nero had died. All extremely powerful men.
