My referencing (or rather the Mu-ologists referencing) of Harry Hay et al simply drew attention to the fact that, in contrast to these people, the Mu-ologists don't seek to overcome oppression but make our oppression more comfortable. This is part of a long phase of the battle to end the battle. Now one thing about the older activists is that they didn't make compromises. Take, for example, Hay's very public siding with NAMBLA despite the opposition of feminists and the official gay movement. They retained their dignity and integrity. That's all true. But then there was still room for radicalism. Now this space has been greatly reduced and excessive radicalism can aggravate the situation. We don't need to reject the idea of replacing the age of consent with something else. But in these circumstances it is not important, it is better to focus on reducing stigma, youth rights and sexuality. |
