My impression was that "nonce" is a Brit term for homosexual.

Possibly it started off with that sense (I tend to think so), but for at least the last 20 years (and probably much longer) it has exclusively meant 'paedophile.'

Tom O'Carroll and myself have disputed the origins of "nonce" at this post on his website. Tom thinks that it is a prison acronym for "Not On Normal Courtyard Exercises" (designating a protected class of prisoners who can't be allowed to mix with the general population).

I think that this is a spurious 'backronym' from a word that 1) has no indisputable prison origin and 2) seems to be a conflation of 'nancy' and 'ponce'. Wiktionary agrees with me. But that's no great shakes. Tom may eb right.

At any rate, there's no doubt at all about what the word means today.
