In reply to Boys in shorts 1 -- speedos vs. formal shorts. posted by Sick Rose on 2020-August-1 21:28:43, Saturday

I am excited to be on this topic, one of my most favorite topics in the world! Thank you for setting it up to its own post. An ever-important topic indeed!! I appreciate the modularity too.

"...speedos are unnecessary..."

Yes I would agree that at that point they mine as well be nude. We really went backwards on that tradition too. Boys at YMCA pools in the early to mid 1900s au naturel. I was quite skeptical of the "boy swimsuits can cause clogs in pool filters" but girls didn't excuse, but I understand the attempt!

It makes sense that having to put on clothing was when there was more body shaming starting up, and nudity immediately being taken as sexual. Once the 1950s Rock and Rolled around we had wild cards like Elvis shaking his hips way too much for TV, turning on all those people no doubt. How absurd.

Boy uniforms being show-ey, to heighten their bodies...that's a good point. Uniforms, whether that is school, church, scouts, is to create uniformity (duh) and to look great doing it. The best way to compliment your boys, to show off your beautiful family. There was a time you could even tell a man his kids were beautiful like a man did about the main character's son in the movie There Will Be Blood (2007), set in the late 1800s. The concept of uniforms designed to compliment the boy really only heightens my interest in short shorts for uniforms, since that does mean at some point it was realized boys looked best that way. They were right, of course.

"1) boys were imitating men whom they admired (British explorers; soldiers)."

I do remember hearing about this as well, I think I specifically first heard about this for Japanese boys. They were modeling after their military too. The short shorts instead of pants were for the "toughening" aspect. I've got a link saved somewhere of a news article with Japanese kids in their swimsuits, barefoot and bare hands even, playing in the snow and pouring cold water on themselves. They were laughing while they did it. I followed a blog for a little while of a mom who moved to Japan talking about that rule for her son. She drove him to school with a blanket over his legs and off came the blanket when he left and the other mothers reassured her he will get used to it.

Sailor uniforms adapted for boys was another one I can recall. Side note, I recently saw a Saturday Night Live skit of one of the guys in a sailor outfit getting his pants ripped into little shorts and was called a twink, turning on one of the guys (who turns out was gay) these two other women were trying to attract. But really, I think the twink trend took some notes on adolescent boys. :)

"Peds in those days were firmly in charge of many schools and loved seeing boys in shorts so they (we) were not going to bend uniform requirements."

If this was the case, what happened here though? How did that hold change? Too much pressure, perhaps? I think even I would run out of logical reasons to keep boys in little shorts versus longer ones. "Because it looks sexier, dammit" probably would not go over well.

Another note, I have a few albums from photographers from the 1960s-1980s of boys that were obviously changed to shorter shorts before modeling (sometimes seeing their other clothes on the couch, bed or chair) for them in private circumstances. It is obvious that it was a major interest at least for boy lovers in that time (no surprise). I can only imagine how many people loved seeing boys in little shorts everywhere. How many of them knew they were really lucky to live in such a time? I see one boy in shorts a few inches above his knees in public and I am thinking about it for days.

Thank you for getting into this topic with me, Sick Rose!
