Knee socks vs. ankle socks.

The great value of knee socks on boys is that they focus attention on the knees and thighs -- they put the thighs on display.

They have secondary value in providing warmth in cold weather (shins/calves get much colder than thighs because the ratio of skin to flesh is higher).

And they are good for hiking because they allow for shorts-wearing while still protecting against brush/thorns/bugs etc.

I get your point about ankle socks -- yes, lower legs can be lovely too. If I recall correctly, you posited an aesthetic rule for shorts and socks on boys that makes total sense to me (I had come up with something similar years ago).

That rule: the amount of bare leg exposed above the knees must in all cases be greater than that below the knees -- no exceptions, no excuses.

Thus a boy who (understandably) chooses to wear ankle socks in hot weather will be required to wear very, very short shorts.

In colder weather when knee socks are preferred, the shorts can be fairly long but must of course end well above the knee. Even in cold winter weather, a boy dressed in wool, flannel, or corduroy shorts that end 2-3 inches above his knees, thick wool knee socks, sturdy shoes, and cable sweater, down jacket, or warm blazer, sweater, long-sleeved shirt and necktie -- together with some kind of head covering and perhaps a neck scarf -- is in no danger of suffering from cold -- no more than he would be from having his face uncovered.

This was, in fact the standard cold weather boys school uniform in Britain for many decades.

Yes, of course, a boy in very short shorts in cold weather is incredibly sexy -- and if he feels that way too, well, great. But in practical terms, longer shorts in winter should be okay -- provided of course that the rule of more bare leg above the knee than below holds.

As for the option of wearing pants in the winter, realistically I think it has to be allowed. I notice that a number of good schools these days in Britain and the States "allow" shorts in warm weather (I notice that often months are specified -- as in May through September.)

I would start by reversing that.

Hot weather uniform: polo shirt with school emblem, short-shorts, ankle socks.

Standared uniform: mid-thigh shorts, knee socks, blazer, long-sleeved shirt, necktie.

Optional cold weather uniform (not required): longs instead of shorts; V-necked sweater underneath jacket.

Then over time one would hope that so few boys would choose to wear long pants that they would gradually disappear (this happened in southern Europe.)

As for informing the boy that from henceforth he will be required to wear shorts at all times and the shorts will be trim and very short -- well, my super ego intervenes here and I simply can't bring myself even to fantasize about insisting on it, much less imagine an RL situation, when the boy really hates the idea (why uniforms are so important -- you want to join this scout troop or attend that excellent school where so many of your friends are going? This is what you will have to wear.)

But when an AF intuits that a boy would be excited, aroused, intrigued by such a rule (shorts all the time, very trim, very short, no exceptions, no excuses) then I think one could imagine all kinds of interesting ways of announcing the rule.

First, the intuition process. It should happen through noticing how the boy dresses -- what he likes to wear; how he presents himself (does he choose clothes that flatter his body? the boy I saw yesterday evening at supper was a case in point -- it clearly mattered to him that he looked good). One could introduce discussion of boys clothing in the past, talk about traditional British uniforms, Thai uniforms, Japanese short-shorts fashion from the 70s/80s -- even those military/police shorts you linked (yeah, they were pretty hot -- particularly the younger police cadet.) Do some web cruising together -- see how he reacts.

Then if you're convinced he would be into it, you simply announce it in a plain, no-nonsense style.

"I have decided that from henceforth you'll be wearing shorts all the time. And the shorts will be very short, trim, and flattering. Starting now."

Then you present him with a pair and insist that he put them on. You indicate that you have arranged to order shorts for school, shorts for sports, shorts for dress-up occasions, shorts for relaxing around the house.

If he protests -- which he probably will -- you have to intuit the quality of the protest. If it's a mixture of "no, I couldn't do that" together with a high blush and all kinds of other signs of intense interest, then you simply re-iterate things -- perhaps with reference to a paddle or belt.

(If he is into THAT -- and a good AF would by that point know such -- well, then a very hot scene awaits).
