supported man-boy sex. Dissidents need to have friends they can lean on or turn to, without having to renounce their beliefs (both past and present). Otherwise, they'll tend to renounce their beliefs, and even rewrite history if needed.

It's not just the strong who rewrite history; the weak try to do it too. Women are notorious for dissociating as needed to enable them to more effectively play the victim, if the alternative would be public shaming and a withdrawal of support. That's why they cry "rape" rather than admitting to being sluts. If society believes their story, then they too may come to believe it, because it's just so convenient to eliminate cognitive dissonance in that way. It's only when society says, "C'mon, we know that you're making up this rape, and we'll punish you more harshly if you don't recant" that they may change their story and decide they weren't raped.

It's like when someone gets converted to a religion at swordpoint. They are under so much pressure that they may, at least temporarily, dismiss all reasons for skepticism from their mind, and make a bargain with God, "If you get me through this, I'll believe in you." If they survive, that proves God heard and responded, which proves that God exists and was pleased by this show of submission. Obviously, the most powerful theocracy must be the one that has been blessed by God.

It's similar to the technique used by organizations such as the Landmark Forum. They tell you, "You need a transformation!" and have you do a bunch of stuff, like call up a former friend turned enemy to tie up loose ends, that makes you feel like a breakthrough is happening in your life. They also question your interpretation of past events. Meanwhile, of course, the friend or family member who pressured you to go to the Forum when you were at a point of crisis in your life is suggesting that their continued support for you during this challenging time may depend somewhat on your transformation, plus there's the fact that several hundred dollars have been invested in this transformation.

If you're placed under enough stress, you can rewrite history as needed to enable you to survive. To prevent this from happening, we need to create means of survival that don't depend on rewriting history.
