It's because the actual pronunciation is different

In parts of the English speaking world (including Britain too if I am correct), it's always been usually pronounced like "paid" rather than ped as ped is Latin for foot (which is where you get words like pedestrian). Paedo is not from Latin though, it is actually Greek. Uptight commie pommies seem to have adopted "pEEEEEEdophile", but they are retards. More intelligent Englishmen pronounce it as paid. It used to be pronounced like that here in NZ and Australia too about 20 or 30 years ago, but now most people pronounce it the American way.
