Yes, you may have heard about Neanderthals. The modern homo sapiens knew how to transfer knowledge to the next generation. They were endurance hunters, while Neanderthals did ambush hunting. With the ice age advancing, the Neanderthals died out, they couldn't adapt as fast.

You might also read Rind and look for the "mentorship-hypothesis" - this is what the underlying attraction to smart neotenous boys is about. Your Todd were on the right trace.
