1) Tú: friends, acquaintances, children and teens.

2) Usted: older people, recently acquainted people who are noticeable older than you, people in power (even if younger).

In case of doubt use "usted". If you use a "usted" when the "tú" is appropriate, the major issue will be chuckles and friendly correction. The contrary (to use the "tú" for, let's say, a governor) is always embarassing and potentially disastrous.

However it depends where you intend to live. The "usted" is used in Colombia to talk to children and even among children!
