Freedom is as Freedom does

I just wish that I had a native country where I could be free and live in peace.

Am I free? Well, I'm not in prison, behind bars. But, then again, I'm not sure which would be more apropos to my situation, to say I'm "A Man Without A Country" or "Stranger In A Strange Land". Maybe both.

Used to be that in the place I am now that there was no concern about being outted. That quickly changed, thanks to the antis. Laws can be passed so quickly, without concern for the long-term effects. "Save the children!" is a powerful motif. There is little need to demonstrate harm. "My god, there is this terrible threat that we didn't know about! Pass a law, quick! Stop these monsters and their terrible cruelty!" Of course, once the laws are in, they are almost never repealed. Then the paranoia sets in.

Once a man has tasted freedom he will never be content to be a slave. -- Walt Disney

I have tasted freedom. It's wonderful! But things have changed.

The funny thing is, it's the paranoids that are after me. They really are!

[SIGH]

My friend has seen this happen so often in so, so many other places. That's why he says it is discouraging the idea of moving to new countries. It doesn't take long to get fucked up, if the antis get funding from the U.S.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." -- Edmund Burke

Evil is as evil does.

The U.S. is concerned about the "axis of evil"? How strange, when they are the nexus, if not the very fountainhead, of much of the evil in the world today.

Being on the run must be better than being behind bars. That I'm absolutely sure of. But sometimes one gets tired of running. And hiding. And pretending. And fearing.

Why is political freedom really good? Because the masses make good choices? We know that that is not true. Because issues can be openly debated? Yes, true to some extent, if people are educated enough to understand the issues.

What is the true value of political freedom?

The knock on the door. In places that don't have political freedom, a dissident always fears that "knock on the door" in the middle of the night. "Police! Open the door!"

One can not have peace of mind when one is living in fear. Fear is like a cancer that eats away at one's soul, until all that remains is the hollow, empty shell of a human being.

When will they ever learn?

Thoughts to ponder:

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. -- Benjamin Franklin

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. -- Benjamin Franklin

If you want to be free, there is but one way; it is to guarantee an equally full measure of liberty to all your neighbors. There is no other. -- Carl Schurz

The First Amendment is often inconvenient. But that is besides the point. Inconvenience does not absolve the government of its obligation to tolerate speech. -- Justice Anthony Kennedy

If a nation values anything more than freedom, it will lose its freedom and the irony of it is that if it is comfort or money it values more, it will lose that, too. -- W. Somerset Maugham

If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all. ~Noam Chomsky

And cynically:

The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way, and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theatre. -- Frank Zappa
