This caught my eye.

Do you know of any good writing on the subject -- something comparable to Michael Rocke's Forbidden Friendships on Renaissance Florence or Gregory Pflugfelder's Cartographies of Desire on Japan of the Edo and early modern periods?

(History is important -- among other things, because only historians can treat our subjects with anything approximating objecctivity.)
