I think this latest one could be among the worst decisions he's made in recent times, in amongst a gallery of many bad decisions of course: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-01-17/donald-trump-threatens-greenland-tariffs/106239964 Who knows.. place your bets on a future war between Europe and the USA. I bet there's some website that would take that bet. What makes the Trump Greenland plans any different to Hitler's plans for European peace.. eh? Why is he so damned determined to have it almost at the cost of losing every friend the USA still has left? Some bullshit strategic nuclear advantage? Mineral wealth? And if it was OK to buy Greenland, what price would the locals want? Maybe fifty trillion dollars, but in Yuan please because the US dollar might not be a good bet? Can that be settled in a week please, mister Trump, can you scrape the money together? And then we'll sell you a few other European and South American countries once the Greenland money comes through. - - - - - He can't blame Obama for everything but he might be partially right, just IMHO. Obama was obviously a more clever fellow, able to articulate himself on the world stage so much better than Trump. But Obama was also in the unenviable position of trying to stop a collapsing financial sector as soon as he was thrust into office, thanks to idiot 'liberal' policies that came before him - ie the GFC and it's causes, basically bad behaviour on all levels in the financial sector. So, the decision was made to use public money to absorb huge amounts of bad mortgages into government ownership. The idea would have been to untangle the mess of packaged mortgages then get rid of them good or bad before too long, but I don't think that was done (I could be wrong). The debt required for the US govt to purchase all those mortgages was BIG, and it's still on the books, growing like a monster every day. The US fed-gov annual deficit is now (I think) about 1.7 trillion for the coming year. Then it will keep growing unless something is done. By rights, the USA should be selling something big to get rid of debt, like maybe Alaska or Hawaii. ![]() |
