The problem with Mamdani's "social democracy" (I doubt it'll even be that) is clear from his positioning with regards to Venezuela lately. Obviously the mayor of NYC has no say in foreign policy, but instead of just saying that, he has to go and repeat the imperialist narrative about Maduro and Venezuela. Keeping in mind that the main economy of NYC is finance (and real estate), structurally, even a "socialist" or "social democratic" mayor of NYC is only creating a fairer distribution of imperial plunder. This is why, I think over a century ago, social democracy was derided as social imperialism, which is exactly what it is. This is why, structurally, there is not and can be no hope coming from Western countries, because their economic systems are based off of plunder and dependency and will collapse when these are removed. A fairer distribution of wealth globally means, at the very least, a relative decline of wealth in the West relative to other regions, or an absolute decline, neither of which would be popular. What makes me optimistic is not someone who makes me feel good about the West, which is just a question of a nicer imperialist vs. a meaner one, but when countries in the Global South develop and provide a better life for their people and take a different path from Westernized finance capital or being mere resource colonies.
