It appears to be a real--but rare--phenomena, and has been reported for thousands of years.

Wikipedia list many eye-witness reports.

I'm not sure that I'd actually like to witness it--some who have didn't live to tell of their experiences...

I suspect that a YouTube search would find more vids.
