The church did not originate the current round of hysteria, which has more secular sources; and I haven't noticed humanists standing up for us. But Pope Francis spoke out against both the death penalty and whole life sentences, and thus was on the side of civilisation, which must ultimately be a precondition for any tolerable future for us as well.
