It's flat out wrong to say faith means "believing in something without a trace of evidence." That never happens. Don't you have considerable faith in modern science, even as you don't understand all the theories, all the math, all the scientific concepts? Of course you do. I do too. Does that mean we "believe in science without a trace of evidence?" Of course not. Faith is a wager, maybe, but it never exists without evidence. If I have faith in my beloved, in, say, the boy I love, it means I trust him in the face of the very unknowability of him. The mystery and beauty that make me love him are enough. His being, in the finite way I have encountered him, is all the evidence I need for me to have faith in him. I should hope you have some faith in yourself, and if you do, I hope that doesn't mean you believe in yourself without a trace of evidence! |
