I bumped into the first chapter of Franklin's book online and read it. I also read a lukewarm review of the book (linked below). The review (which I now see was by someone from U of Melbourne) makes rather a lot out of the Melbourne-Sydney rivalry, or at least claims Franklin makes a lot out of it. The reviewer does concede Franklin's book is a fun read, though. Looks like Studies in Empirical Philosophy is available online. I might take a look at Chapter 28, "The Servile State." (These are standalone essays anyway, right?) Belloc's Cautionary Tales for Children was a favorite of mine in early adolescence. Feel free to recommend other chapters if the mood takes you. The McAuley quote is quite wonderful and impressively pithy. hugzu ;-p [@nonymouse] [Guardster] [Proxify] [Anonimisierungsdienst] |
