Not exactly correct. Though there have been schools of Islamic jurisprudence that have considered dogs, or their saliva, 'unclean' (meaning in practice that anything licked by a dog has to be washed - a sensible precaution, surely), the notion that dogs are unclean is very far from being the established view in Islam, and in fact Islam is full of folklore that depicts dogs positively. The Koran contains three references to dogs, all of which are either neutral or positive. Cats have also been popular in Islamic culture. My companion drew my attention to something on social media recently which showed that, even in Gaza, amidst all the murder and mayhem, there are muslims that are going out of their way to rescue and look after cats and dogs. Islam's treatment of cats, in particular, compares favourably with the revolting record of Christianity. |
