JH Huizinga was the son of Johan Huitzinga, one of my favourite cultural historians and the author of the immortal Herfsttij der Middeleeuwen.

And if there ever was a Herfsttij, we are surely living through it now. Perhaps The Autumn of the Middle Ages should be compulsory reading for all people who want to understand our own long cultural waning.
